tabLocal Chamber Recital Series in April
Chamber Concerts Show Versatility
By: Master Sgt Sherry Burt
U. S. Air Force Band of the Golden West
10 April 2013

The Band of the Golden West presented three concerts in early April at local venues in Davis, Suisun City, and Vallejo. The Chamber Recital Series allowed the audience to get to know the musicians as soloists while providing the performers an opportunity to choose their own pieces and ensembles.
Organized by Senior Airman Matthew Garza, the series provided the opportunity for bandsmen to select their own repertoire and organize their own ensembles. Covering an impressive array of styles, the program featured a variety of instruments in different configurations and included the talents of civilian pianists Michael Seth Orland and Dr. Teri Yumae.
The program opened with a standard chamber work for English horn and piano by Robert Lane followed by a marimba and trumpet duo. The pieces that followed combined oboe, clarinet, bassoon, English horn, trumpet, euphonium, and piano in duos and trios, representing a range of fine chamber compositions. Toward the end of the concert, the ensembles on display were somewhat less of the traditional chamber music variety. Two ensembles consisting of Irish instruments--Irish flute, penny whistle, and bodhran with guitar--represented a more folksy side of chamber playing. Paying tribute to Agent 007, a trombone quartet performed a medley of theme songs from James Bond films. And finally, a septet of flute, oboe, horn, and trumpet with rhythm section closed out the show with a unique and virtuosic performance of Sting's iconic "Seven Days."
According to Senior Airman Garza, the Band of the Golden West plans to continue presenting recitals of chamber music in communities around Travis Air Force Base several times a year. For other opportunities to hear these fine professional Airman-musicians, please visit the band's website at http://bandofthegoldenwest.af.mil.
